Senjyokei (9k)

| Time for another hike through
Senjyoukei, but for a change, I am with a group, as some members
from the Late Risers Hiking Club are visiting. A small, multi-cultural,
multi-generational group from around Shimane and Yamaguchi. We start
at about 11, and its a glorious Fall day, though still a little
cool in the shade. I am ostensibly leading the hike, but as the
path is well formed there is little leading to do and we amble along
chatting and introducing ourselves to each other. |

| There are splashes of vivid
color dorring the mountains... nothing too ostentatious, but certainly
with the blue sky its the most colorful time of the year. I had
assured everybody before the hike that it was an easy hike, though
with some stair climbing, and I was surprised by just how much climbing
there was, but after a couple of hours we climb out of the gorge
to the road and stop for a picnic lunch. We are not alone. There
is a small group of Japanese doing the same thing. On the 5 or 6
times Ive walked in Senjoukei, this is the first time I have ever
encountered anyone else. |

| After lunch we walk another
couple of K up the road till we reach the overview of the final
set of waterfalls which in some senses are the best of the lot.
They remind me of Havasupai Falls in the Grand Canyon. We take the
old unused road back down to the parking lot. Along the way we encounter
a small snake, a good indicator of just how mild the weather is
this time of the year. |
